Abstract:This paper experiments the effects of the different mulching times on the soil nutrients of Phyllostachys praecox stands using rice chaff as the mulching materials. The results show that mulching makes the soil hydrolytic nitrogen and available phosphorus in the topsoil layer (0-10 cm) decrease, and the extent of the decrease increases with the increased times of mulching, while the soil available potassium content increases with the increased times of mulching. In the meantime, the content of soil organic mater and cation exchange capacity of mulched stands grow, with the soil fertility maintenance improved. Mulching also improves the soil physical properties such as lower soil bulk density and enhanced moisture retention and air permeability. Increased times of mulching makes the soil acidity weaker, pH value increased and the acidity intensity of topsoil declining, and the trend of pH value increase is different due to the varied fertilization and years of mulching. Thus it is proposed to curb the soil quality decrease by changing forestland management model or adopting gap zone mulching method.
