Abstract:Phyllostachys violascens is an excellent shoot production bamboo species. Mulching technique significantly increases its economic benefits. With experiments, the paper studied the effects of amount and method in use of wheat ash and rice chaff as a new mulching materials on soil temperature and shoot yields. The results showed that when the depth of mulching was properly at 23.0~23.5 cm, i. e., 2.5~3.0 cm at the lower layer with wheat ash as heat generating layer and the top layer deep at 20.0~23.5cm of rice chaff as warm-keeping layer, the soil in the forest could keep at relatively high temperature and the bamboo shoot could achieve a high yield; As for the application of mulching materials, it was concluded that wheat ash would be better to be applied twice, and after the 2 nd application, rice chaff could be mulched, which could extend the period of shooting and also benefit for keeping the stable surface temperature and increasing shoot yield.
