Abstract:The planting of bamboo in the northern region of China is restricted by low temperature. Four ornamental bamboo species, i. e., Phyllostachys glauca, Ph. acuta Chu et Chao, Indocalamus tessellatus (Munro) Keng f and Ph. propinqua McClure were chosen to test the 4 inherent physiological indexes closely related to cold resistance under the natural low temperature in November at the Middle Area of Shanxi Province. The analysis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), Malondialdehyde (MDA) and soluble sugar indicated that different bamboo species had the different adaptation to the low temperature. Comparatively, Ph. glauca showed the strongest resistance to cold, while Ph. propinqua McClure had the lowest resistance to cold. It was therefore suggested that Ph. glauca should be introduced in the Middle Area of Shanxi and the winter protective measures should be well taken in the first three years of introduction.
