Abstract:Dendrocalamus brandisii ‘Manxie Tianzhu’, belonging to Dendrocalamus brandisii (Munro) Kurz in the genus of Dendrocalamus Nees, Bambusoideae, was found in 1998 from the cultivated populations of D. ‘Brandisii’. This cultivar was cultivated from D. ‘Brandisii’ through further selection, separation and cultivation. The key differences between D. ‘Manxie Tianzhu’ and the cultivated form of D. ‘Brandisii’ include that the culms of D. ‘Manxie Tianzhu’ are more taller and bigger than the ones of D. ‘Brandisii’, with 15-20 m in height, 10-16 cm in diameter. The culm tips prolapsed. The secondary branches envelop in turn the main branches. The culms are green at the early stage. The bamboo shoot production can reach more than 7 500-9 000 kg/ha. The culms of D. ‘Brandisii’ is relatively smaller than D. ‘Manxie Tianzhu’, with 10-15 m in height and 10-12 cm in diameter. The culm tips are extremely pendulous. The secondary branches do not envelop the main branches. The culms appear reddish brown to bright yellow at the early stage. The bamboo shoot production is under 4 500-6 000 kg/ha.
