Abstract:Phyllostachys edulis cv. Tao kiang was chosen at bamboo species orchard of Jiangxi Academy of Forestry and Wuzhifeng Forest Farm of Suichuan County in Sichuan Province for observing and studying its culm characteristics including the quantity and width of yellow-green stripes so as to develop the standard for Ph. edulis cv. Tao kiang types classification and classify the bamboo into different types. The results indicated that the total number of yellow-green stripes of Ph. edulis cv. Tao kiang was within the range of 8 to 44, with the average at 24. The proportion of the yellow stripes width was 9.15% to 87.50%, while the proportion of the green stripes width was 12.50% to 90.85%. The minimum width variable amplitude of the yellow stripes was smaller than that of the green stripes. However, the largest width variable amplitude of the yellow stripes and the green stripes were similar. There were some differences in yellow stripes ratio between different culms and different nodes, and therefore the yellow stripes ratio could be used as the indicator for types classification of Ph. edulis cv. Tao kiang. With the position of culm color stripe and yellow stripes ratio as the classification indicators, Ph. edulis cv. Tao kiang could be divided into 6 types, i.e., golden wire type, green stripe type, yellow stripe type, golden stripe type, yellow groove type and green groove type.
